In 1991, Donnajeanne Goheen opened YOUNG PERFORMERS STUDIO in Pioneer Square, Seattle and over the next few years developed some of the top young talent in the metropolitan Seattle area. Each fall, nearly every Seattle theatre had YPS kids on stage ---" Peter Pan" at Intiman and Seattle Civic Light Opera, "Wizard of Oz" on several stages including 5th Avenue, "Showboat" at the Paramount, and many other performers on stage at numerous theatres including Renton Civic, Village Theatre, Auburn Dinner Theatre, and Seattle Rep. In 1999, YPS performer Cara Rudd beat out the competition in L.A. and New York and played the coveted role of Mary Lennox in "The Secret Garden" at the 5th Avenue Theatre and every year since 1993, YPS performers have been cast in the ACT production of "The Christmas Carol".
When TV and film crews come to Seattle, the
YPS talent have prevailed and won more on-camera roles than any
other talent group. Long-time YPS member, Teru McDonald was
nominated for a Hollywood Young Artist Award in 1996 for her
portrayal of a child traveling alone on the fated plane in the
NBC-TV mini-series, "Pandora's Clock". She and another
YPS member, Elsie Vance were cast as sisters in the film,
"Under Heaven" and Teru also had speaking roles in
"The DISK-O BOYZ" and "Afterworld". A
TV pilot, "Emerald City" also cast Teru as the
lead.
Many YPS members have traveled to Los Angeles for summers or pilot season and some have moved to L.A. permanently because of work.
