The March of the Ad Hocs
26 June 08.

On 26 June 1863, a battalion of cavalry plus John B. Gordon's Georgia Brigade of Jubal Early's Division marched from Greenwood to Gettysburg along the Chambersburg Pike.  Two miles east of Greenwood was the Caledonia Iron Works which included a large charcoal furnace.  Gen. Early ordered the furnace be destroyed.

On 26 June, a 145 years later, another march will occur along much of the same general route taken by Gordon's Georgians. The AoT ad hocs will conduct a one day, seventeen mile march from the Caledonia State Park along the Appalachian Trail to the At High Tide reenactment site.  No furnaces will be destroyed this time.

The plan is to gather a company sized entity at the Caledonia State Park on Wednesday night.  By clicking on this provided link, zooming on the star and switching to the aerial image, the beginning of the route becomes visible.  This is a section of the Appalachian Trail.   About half of the proposed route is unpaved road.  The remaining portion is hardroad along back country roads and streets in an effort to stay off the busy Chambersburg Highway.  The march commences at first light Thursday morning.  Due to the length of the march, a short living history near the McPherson Barn has been eliminated.

The march is organized by Major Silas Tackitt, a staff officer in the Army of Tennessee.
